Jayne Pomplas is a fiddle player, vocalist, and composer whose music sits at the intersection of Irish traditional music, roots, folk, Americana, and contemporary experimental sound.

Known for her virtuosic playing and distinctive voice, described as “sweetly fierce” , she delivers performances that are both intimate and electrifying, with a fearless creative instinct.

Whether performing solo, leading an ensemble, or accompanying others, she crafts a beguiling sound that places her among a new generation of artists expanding the scope of modern folk music.

A lifelong exponent of the New York–Sligo fiddle tradition, Jayne studied under masters Brian Conway and Tony DeMarco, developing a style marked by agility, ornamentation, and clarity. Her deep connection to regional fiddle styles continues to inform her phrasing and tone, while her improvisational instinct expands those traditions into new, cinematic sound worlds.

She works with students of all ages and levels, from beginners picking up the instrument for the first time to advanced musicians developing style, tone, and artistic confidence. Her teaching is grounded in the Suzuki method, focusing on listening, gradual technical development, and confidence building. She draws deeply from the Sligo fiddle tradition, bringing style, ornamentation, and phrasing into her lessons where appropriate. Jayne is a writer and interdisciplinary artist as well as a musician.  Her latest work, ATHRAITHEOIR | shapeshifter, was performed at Smock Alley Theatre as part of Scene + Heard Festival of New Work 2026, to a sold-out audience.

ATHRAITHEOIR | shapeshifter reimagines the ancient Irish tale of Mad Sweeney (Buile Suibhne), and uses it to explore theories in quantum physics.  The piece also incorporates exerpts from Irish literature that derived from Mad Sweeney or quantum physics itself.

The 40-minute production blends literature, traditional Irish music, experimental synthesisers, contemporary movement, and sean-nós dance with quantum physics to create a unique viewing experience.

Inspired by Buile Suibhne and Seamus Heaney’s Sweeney Astray, the piece follows Sweeney, a king cursed to wander the Irish landscape as a bird. His exile and descent into madness are presented as a lived, and embodied experience, which are brought to life through dance and the writings of James Joyce, Flann O’Brien, and more.

Music runs throughout the performance, and audiences can expect to enjoy live performances on pipes, whistle, fiddle, and guitar from some of Ireland’s most renowned traditional Irish folk musicians and dancers.

Traditional airs associated with locations in the original poem are interwoven with experimental sound: instruments are processed in real time through a modular synthesiser built into a bicycle, alongside birdsong and field recordings gathered in Antrim, where much of the original epic poem took place
